Ready, Set, Wear It! - Lifejacket World Record
On Saturday, May 19, sailors and paddlers at Westwind Sailing, Mariner Sea Scouts, and Dana Outriggers in Dana Point, California will gather to set a world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated. The goal is not only to promote the comfortable and versatile options when it comes to life jackets, but also to educate the public about life jackets and safe boating in general.
The annual event, hosted by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) in partnership with the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC), serves as the kick-off to National Safe Boating Week, May 19-25, the official launch of the 2012 North American Safe Boating Campaign. Educating the boating public about the safety and comfort of inflatable life jackets has been a main focus of the North American Safe Boating Campaign.
The local event will take place on May 19, 12 pm (noon), at the OC Sailing and Events Center, 34451 Ensenada Pl. Dana Point, CA. Westwind will be hosting JAWS Adaptive Boating Camp, as well as regular scheduled sailing and paddling classes, clubs, and open paddle rentals. Mariner Sea Scouts and Dana Outrigger paddlers will be on the water as well.
Our goal is to educate the public and bring awareness to the importance of wearing a lifejacket, said Diane Wenzel, Executive Director at Westwind Sailing. We anticipate over 100 enthusiastic boaters and sailors at OC Sailing & Events Center will help to set the world record.
Last year, 1,685 people gathered at more than 99 events held around the world to set a new record for the number of participants who inflated their inflatable life jacket or wore an inherently buoyant life jacket.
U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that drowning was the reported cause of death in three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities in 2010, and that 88 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.
Members of the boating public including anglers, hunters, paddlers, water skiers and others who use boats are encouraged to attend. More information about the event and safe boating is available at Safe Boating Campaign
